| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the City of Flint has been awarded a $389,910 grant under the Transition to Teaching Program. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the new grant to the Flint Community Schools to help recruit, train and mentor new teachers with non-teaching backgrounds to serve in high-need local educational agencies. Earlier this summer, Kildee contacted the U.S. Department of Education to express his strong support for the Transition to Teaching grant application submitted by Flint Community Schools.
“In order to improve the academic performance of Flint Community Schools, we must actively recruit and train a high quality teaching force,” said Kildee. “This new program will help Flint Community School’s attract and retain teachers that are truly dedicated and committed to helping our students excel in school and life.”
In accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Flint Community Schools (FCS) is aggressively seeking to achieve and implement the goals set by this law. As part of that effort, FCS is also focused on increasing the academic achievement by fostering a close relationship with several of Michigan’s outstanding institutions of higher education. This collaborative effort will help assist Flint Community Schools in recruiting, preparing, and providing sustained, quality support to future high-qualified teachers in the Flint area. This grant will enable approximately 180 new highly qualified teachers to be recruited, trained and retained in Flint Community Schools.
As the ranking Democratic Member on the Subcommittee on Education Reform, Congressman Kildee has worked hard to help recruit and retain teachers in urban areas that are plagued by high turnover and teacher shortages. During this Congress, Representative Kildee has primarily focused on increased teacher quality, class-size reduction, school construction and improved school safety. As a former teacher, Congressman Kildee also recognizes and understands the positive impact a high quality, stable teaching force has on the academic performance of students. |
