Kildee Announces $683,236 Grant For WFUM Public Television Station

Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the University of Michigan at Flint has been awarded a $683,236 grant to finance the digital conversion of the public television station WFUM, Ch. 28.  The $683,236 grant will help fund the first phase of this project, which will allow WFUM to purchase an NTSC transmitter and a studio-transmitter link.  The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a division of the U.S. Commerce Department, awarded the grant to WFUM to assist in the expansion and improvement of public telecommunications services.

“WFUM continues to contribute significantly to our community by providing educational and cultural programs,” said Kildee. “These funds will enable WFUM to continue to enhance our community while facilitating a smooth transition to digital television.”

WFUM has provided quality programming to Mid-Michigan for over 20 years.  Recently, the station expanded its audience by providing service to the Southeast Michigan markets, including Ann Arbor and Detroit.  In addition, WFUM enjoys the support of over 8,000 continuing members and an audience of nearly 3 million viewers. After receiving this grant, the station plans to take advantage of the increased bandwidth capacity by increasing their involvement with community partners such as K-12 educators and high education institutions.
