| Washington, D.C: Congressman Dale E. Kildee today announced the introduction of the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2001. In response to recent military action, the House Education and the Workforce 21st Century Competitive Subcommittee introduced new legislation that will provide college-loan relief for reservists that have been called to active military duty. Congressman Kildee is an original cosponsor of this bipartisan legislation.
“We must ease the financial burdens of those men and women in uniform who are committed to defending our freedom and protecting our security," said Kildee. “This bill will reflect our gratitude and appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our nation.”
The Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2001 will grant the Secretary of Education the authority to relax repayment obligations of student loans for active duty military. This legislation will enable reservists to reduce or delay monthly student loan payments while maintaining the integrity of student loan programs. Accordingly, the Secretary of Education will provide Congress with a report that will measure the waivers impact on federal student aid programs. At that time, the Secretary will also provide Congress with recommendations for changes to statutory and regulatory provisions. |
