Washington, D.C.-Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the Saginaw County Community Action Committee, Inc. would receive a $1,917,837 grant to fund the Head Start Handicapped Training and Technical Assistance Program. The Office of Children and Families, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the grant to the Saginaw County Community Action Committee to provide special assistance to low-income families with disabled children. In August 2004, the Saginaw County Community Action Committee, Inc. received a $2,090,706 grant to fund the same Head Start program.
“As a leading champion of the Head Start Program, I am delighted to announce the $2 million grant award for the Head Start Handicapped Training and Technical Assistance Program in Saginaw County,” said Kildee. “This grant will help make the Head Start Program more accessible to families with children that have special needs.”
The Head Start Program, arguably the federal government’s most popular anti-poverty program, is specifically designed to help low-income children develop the skills they need to successfully enter the public education system. The program provides an invaluable service to eligible preschool children between the ages 3 and 5. The Head Start Program also gives families greater self-sufficiency and competency.
In Saginaw County, the Head Start program has been extremely successful in increasing childhood literacy. This supplemental grant provides additional funds to Saginaw County Community Action Committee to provide disabled children with special services and to help train staff to work with disabled children. |
