Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee announced today that the Flint Mass Transit Authority would receive $6 million to purchase new vehicles, equipment and fund the popular Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) Program. Kildee originally requested these funds from the Appropriation Subcommittee on Transportation in order to meet the demands of regional expansion and increased transit options in Genesee County. Kildee’s funding requests were included in the final Transportation Appropriations conference report, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the Omnibus Appropriations bill.
“I am delighted that I was able to secure $6 million in funding for long-term improvements to the Flint transit system. This funding will ensure that area residents will continue to have access to the best public transportation available,” said Kildee. “A reliable public transportation system is vital to the economic prosperity and public safety of our area because it provides area residents with better access to facilities and services throughout the district. By providing more efficient and reliable services, the use of Flint MTA commuter services will continue to grow and expand.”
The Flint Mass Transit Authority will use the $6 million earmark to fund three different mass transit programs.
- $3 million to purchase replacement vans for Curb-to-Curb Service and rehabilitate existing transit coaches.
- $2 million to expand Job Access Reverse Commute Program.
- $1 million to purchase Intelligent Transportation System equipment to implement a plan to deploy the following transit ITS technologies: computer aided dispatching and traveler information systems, Mobile Data Terminals, Automated Voice Response, and automated onboard surveillance.
