WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that he has secured $1,450,000 in federal funding for projects in Flint. This funding was secured in the Omnibus Appropriations Act, which is expected to pass the House tomorrow, followed by the Senate and will then be signed into law by the President.
Listed below are the details of the project that received funding at the request of Congressman Kildee:
$500,000 for Hurley Medical Center, Emergency Department and Trauma Center: Funding will be used for the renovation and expansion of the emergency department and trauma center at Hurley Medical Center. Hurley Medical Center is a non-profit, public medical center located in Flint, Michigan. Since FY 2008, Congressman Kildee has secured $806,696 for this project.
“I am very pleased that Congress will soon approve my request for this important project at Hurley Medical Center,” said Congressman Kildee. “Hurley Medical Center provides quality care for our community and this funding will help improve and expand emergency and trauma services. I am proud to support this important project that will benefit the health and well-being of our community.”
$850,000 for the YWCA of Greater Flint “Partners in Transition” Program for At-Risk Young Women. When the bill originally passed the House, it contained $500,000 for this project, but during conference report negotiations, that amount was raised to $850,000. This program will assist and support young women as they age out of foster care services and transition into independent adulthood. Research shows that young women are most vulnerable during the 18 months after exiting foster care and at-risk for dropping out of school, engaging in prostitution, and being victimized by domestic violence and sexual assault. The YWCA will provide a solid support system comprised of both adult mentoring and peer-to-peer support.
“This important program assists and supports young women during the often difficult transition between foster care and independent lives as adults. Young women who are just leaving foster care are at higher risk for domestic and sexual abuse, as well as unplanned pregnancies. But through adult mentoring and peer-to-peer support, ‘Partners in Transition’ offers a solid support system to these young women to help get them on the path to success. I am proud to support this program and I am thankful for the services it provides to our community,” said Congressman Kildee.
$100,000 for the Safe Highway Program in Flint This project allows for the purchase and implementation of permanent programmable electronic roadway signs that will warn motorists of dangerous driving conditions on I-475.
“Public safety is always of the utmost importance. This funding will help better inform drivers of dangerous conditions on I-475, helping to improve road safety and reduce accidents and injuries,” said Congressman Kildee.
