| Washington, D.C.- Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the Flint area would receive $2.52 million to fund local housing and service programs that provide assistance to the homeless. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded these funds to several public and private nonprofit organizations in Flint that are committed to helping the homeless become independent and self-sufficient.
“In order to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, we must provide immediate access to housing and support services to every homeless individual,” said Kildee. “This funding will enable public and private nonprofit organizations to provide homeless individuals with critical assistance that will enable them to avoid a life on the streets.”
The Continuum of Care grants will provide funding for the Supportive Housing Program, a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development initiative. The objective of the Supportive Housing Program is to help homeless individuals transition from homelessness to a permanent and stable living situation. In addition, these Continuum of Care grants will be used to help fund services like job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. The entire state of Michigan received $30.9 million in Continuum Care grants to provide immediate assistance to the homeless. |
