Kildee Announces Millions in Funding for Supportive Housing to Combat Homelessness

WASHINGTON - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that 5th District public and private nonprofit organizations would receive over $3.5 million to fund local housing and service programs that provide assistance to the homeless.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded these funds as part of its Continuum of Care program to several public and private nonprofit organizations in Genesee, Saginaw, Bay and Tuscola Counties that are committed to helping the homeless become independent and self-sufficient.

“In order to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, we must provide immediate access to housing and support services to every homeless individual,” said Kildee.  “This funding will enable local nonprofit organizations to provide homeless individuals with critical assistance that will enable them to move away from a life on the streets.”

The Continuum of Care grants will provide funding for both the Supportive Housing Program and the Shelter Plus Care Program, two U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development initiatives.  The objective of the Supportive Housing Program is to help homeless individuals transition from homelessness to a permanent and stable living situation.  The Shelter Plus Care Program provides rental assistance for hard-to-reach homeless people with disabilities.

Each county in Congressman Kildee's district received Continuum of Care grants:

  • $835,336 for the Saginaw Housing Commission in Saginaw for both the Supportive Housing Program and the Shelter Plus Care Program.
  • $2,364,439 to the Metro Housing Partnership, Inc., of Genesee County for the Supportive Housing Program.
  • $239,014 for the Human Development Commission in Tuscola County for the Supportive Housing Program.
  • $106,488 for the Bay Area Women’s Center for the Supportive Housing Program.
