Detroit, MI. — Congressman John Conyers, Jr., Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, made the following statement upon learning of the decision by Daimler Chrysler to build a new plant in Trenton, Michigan:

“I commend Daimler Chrysler on their decision to continue operations in Trenton. Chrysler’s decision to implement sustainable redevelopment of an existing urban industrial site benefits both the economy and the environment.

“I applaud Mayor Jerry Brown’s role in working with Chrysler to make this a win-win situation. It was a rational and logical solution and I am delighted with the results.

“Tom LaSorda, President and CEO of Chrysler Group, Ron Gettelfinger, President of the UAW,  Governor Jennifer Granholm and my friend Frank Fountain have crafted a plan that will create 500 news jobs in Trenton and serve as the first step in the Chrysler Group ‘Recovery and Transformation Plan.’

“The decision to reinvest corporate assets in Trenton was a sound business decision for Daimler Chrysler and a critical environmental and economic decision for the metro Detroit area. The City of Trenton has demonstrated that it has the right stuff. My congratulations to everyone involved.”
