(Washington, DC)—Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, announced that Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District will receive more than $15 million in federal funding for specific energy and water projects. The funds were included in the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, 2008 (H.R. 2641), approved by the U.S. House of Representatives today. The measure passed with bi-partisan support 312-112. The bill will now be reconciled with the Senate version and then sent to the President to sign into law. “Our community understands first-hand the devastation rivers can wreak. As Mayor, I remember watching the waters rise over the roofs of homes and businesses when I was during the Flood of 1993. Since then we have made progress to hold back rising waters. But the flooding that occurred this spring reminded us all that we continue to have work to do when it comes to controlling the rivers and streams that have always brought prosperity to our community,” said Congressman Cleaver. Cleaver announced funds for the following energy and water projects: • $9 million to continue construction of the Turkey Creek flood protection project. • $3.5 million for the continued construction and design of the Blue River Channel flood control project, located along the Blue River and tributaries in Kansas City and running through a long-standing business district and many residential neighborhoods. • $1.19 million for the Kansas City’s Seven River Levees Local Protection System to complete a feasibility study of the Metropolitan flood protection system on the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. • $1 million for a Multi-Disciplined Integrated Collaborative Environment project at the Honeywell Kansas City Plant, part of the Department of Energy’s Federal Manufacturing Technologies Program and a National Nuclear Security Administration facility that employs 2700 individuals in Kansas City. • $200,000 for a Brush Creek Basin feasibility study • $200,000 for the Swope Park Industrial Area flood protection project in an area housing 400 jobs in Kansas City’s urban core. Additionally, the bill contains $76.4 million for operations of the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Agency facility, located at the Bannister Federal Complex and operated by Honeywell. Emanuel Cleaver, II is the U.S. Representative for Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit, Raytown, Grandview, Sugar Creek, Belton, Raymore and Peculiar, Missouri. He is a member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee and the Speaker’s Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Congressman Cleaver also serves as a Regional Whip of the Democratic Caucus and Second Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. |
