Washington, D.C. - Citing the critical need for projects including upgrades to water and wastewater systems and construction of important community facilities such as fire stations, health care clinics, and schools, U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Specialty Crops, Rural Development and Foreign Agriculture, will hold a roundtable briefing on critical funding needs for Rural America on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in Room 1300 of the Longworth House Office Building. Congressman McIntyre stated, “Rural America faces some very challenging times, and the upcoming economic stimulus package must invest in the programs that can help our small towns, communities, and counties prosper. This roundtable will allow us to hear first hand about opportunities that can create jobs in Rural America. As the 111th Congress begins its work, rural development programs need to be at the forefront!” USDA Rural Development programs invest needed funds in rural communities, stimulating local economies and preserving the quality of life in small towns across the nation. Proposals to provide critically needed funding for rural development programs in a possible economic stimulus package have been discussed, and this briefing will provide an overview of the needs and opportunities for rural development funding nationwide. The roundtable discussion will include Members of the Agriculture Committee, other interested Members of Congress, Billy Ray Hall, President of the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, and officials from the National Association of Counties, National Association of Development Organizations, and the National Rural Water Association. |
