YOUTH EARNS CONGRESSIONAL AWARD FOR SERVICE

(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) today announced that Stowe Nelson of Gastonia, NC has been awarded a 2003 Bronze Congressional Award Medal.  This medal is awarded to individuals who have worked for the betterment of their community, and for the goals they set for their own personal development.

Stowe Nelson’s work exemplifies the cornerstones of the Congressional Award: service to others; initiative; and achievement.  The Congressional Award is open to all young people ages 14-23 in America.  To earn the award, young people must set and achieve goals in the four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.

Stowe earned the Bronze Congressional Award Medal for volunteering with various children’s programs and participating in a 30-hour famine to raise money for “World Vision.”  He also worked to improve his acting skills by performing in Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at his school, and attended Governor’s school to study English.

More than 6,500 Congressional Awards have been earned since the award was established in 1979.  Stowe represents one of sixteen North Carolina youth to earn a Congressional Award Medal in the year 2003.
