| (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) today managed the rule for The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 Conference Report. Myrick, who led the floor debate, has been an outspoken advocate for banning the act known as Partial-Birth Abortion.
"Partial-Birth Abortion is an horrific act of human violence," Myrick said. "As an original cosponsor of this legislation, I am very pleased to see this conference report reach the floor of the House of Representatives. As a mother, and a grandmother, it is astonishing to me that this horrible practice is even remotely legal in America today," she added.
The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act makes it illegal in the United States for a physician to perform a partial-birth abortion. The procedure takes place in the final trimester. Congressional findings have shown that the procedure is not medically necessary, and actually poses a significant threat to a mother’s health and future fertility. It is estimated that at least 2,200 to 5,000 partial-birth abortions are performed each year in the United States.
The Conference Report passed the House 281-142. The Senate is expected to pass the Conference Report soon, and the President is expected to sign the bill into law.
