(Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) today voted for the Marriage Penalty Tax Relief package, HR 4181. This law will accelerate, and make permanent, tax cuts for married couples', which were enacted in the 2001 tax relief package. Without this law, 27 million married couples would face an average tax increase of $300 in 2005, and over 35 million will see a tax increase of more than $700 starting in 2011.
“Any tax that is allowed to sunset is a tax increase on working families. We cannot allow that to happen. Our economy is gaining steam and we need to eliminate the marriage tax penalty, and prevent other tax increases, to keep it moving forward,” said Myrick.
The bill passed the House by a vote of 323 to 95. To see a video of Rep. Myrick’s speech today on the House Floor regarding the Marriage Penalty Tax Relief package, please visit: www.myrick.house.gov
