(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) today announced that Union County will receive $1 million in funding for the Highway 74 Monroe Bypass. The funding is included in HR 4818, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005.
The funding for the Monroe Bypass project will be used for right-of-way acquisition and construction of a 13.6-mile, four-lane bypass of US Highway 74 around the City of Monroe. Currently, Highway 74 carries a great deal of commuter and cargo traffic bound for Charlotte, which makes the area prone to gridlock. This project will alleviate some of this traffic by creating a four lane, controlled access, divided highway bypass of Monroe which will provide an alternate route for traffic seeking to avoid the Monroe area traffic congestion.
Representatives Myrick and Hayes sent several letters to Congressman Ernest Istook, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and Independent Agencies, in order to get this funding.
