REP. MYRICK VOTES TO PROTECT “UNDER GOD” IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

(Washington, D.C.) – On September 23, 2004, US Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) voted for H.R. 2028, known as the Pledge Protection Act.  This bill removes from the jurisdiction of the federal courts the right to hear or determine any claim that the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance violates the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Over the past two years, the Pledge of Allegiance has come under fire from those who want to take out the phrase “under God.”  By passing this bill, the House of Representatives took an important first step in preventing activist court judges from, in effect, creating laws regarding the Pledge of Allegiance.

The bill passed the House by a vote of 247-173.  The bill will now go before the Senate for debate.
