| (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) today announced $1 million for the US textile industry in the Omnibus Appropriations Conference Report for FY04. The money will be used to continue research and development of a tagging and identification system for textiles.
"This funding is very important to the textile industry," Myrick said. "Now we can keep developing tagging and identification systems to help the domestic textile industry survive and move forward. This is another tool that helps enforce a fair and level playing field for our textile companies."
It is estimated that billions of dollars in illegal clothes and fabrics make it into the United States each year. The funding Myrick has secured will continue development of a tagging and identification system, through the US Department of Commerce and Energy. This system will help the US Customs Service determine if the textile and apparel products entering the country are meeting the textile input requirements outlined by US trade laws.
Myrick previously announced $9.5 million dollars to hire more US Customs agents to prevent illegal textile goods from entering into the U.S., as well as enforce textile transshipment laws. The Omnibus Appropriations Conference Report has been filed with the Committee on Rules, and will be voted on by the House on December 8, 2003.
