| (Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representatives Sue Myrick (NC-9) and Mel Watt (NC-12) today announced $12 million for the NC/SC Light Rail Project, and $5 million for a new bus facility. The funding for these projects comes from the Omnibus Appropriations Conference Report, which the House is scheduled to vote on December 8, 2003. The Conference Report must still pass the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, and be signed into law by the President.
The South Corridor NC/SC Light Rail Project will use the $12 million to begin construction. Required Environmental Impact Studies were completed earlier this year with the help of prior federal grants Reps. Myrick and Watt were instrumental in obtaining. This sets the stage for construction to begin. The South Corridor rail will run from uptown Charlotte to I-485 in Pineville and will help relieve traffic congestion in that area.
The $5 million dollar federal appropriation will help fund a new Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) maintenance and operations center. The new center will support the expansion of the local bus system fleet, which will increase from 256 to over 400 vehicles.
