HOLT, SOCOLOW TO HIGHLIGHT JOB TRAINING, UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS DURING VISIT TO NEW BRUNSWICK ONE STOP OFFICE MONDAY AT 11:30

What:     Holt and Socolow will discuss provisions of the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act - which Rep. Holt helped passed and which President Obama signed into law – that will benefit unemployed workers. According to the most recent reports, the national unemployment rate is 8.1 percent and the New Jersey unemployment rate is 8.2 percent.

The bill provides $3.95 billion for job training, including increased funding for grants for adult, dislocated worker, and youth job training, and summer jobs for eligible youth.

The bill extends through December 2009 the unemployment benefits program that otherwise was scheduled to be phased out at the end of March 2009 – helping an additional 3.5 million jobless workers. The bill also increases unemployment benefits for 20 million jobless workers by $25 per week.

To help workers maintain their health coverage, the bill provides a 65 percent subsidy for COBRA premiums for up to nine months for people who had health coverage through their employer when they were involuntarily separated from their jobs between 9/1/08 and 12/31/09.
