Queens, NY – Residents of Belle Harbor, Queens have awoken for the second consecutive day to anti-Semitic graffiti defiling their neighborhood. Yesterday morning, the words “Heil Hitler” were discovered scrawled with black spray paint on the side of Young Israel of Belle Harbor.
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement:
“For the second day in a row, the close knit community of Belle Harbor has been shaken by cowardly acts of intolerance. Belle Harbor is a community of good faith and good neighbors. Hate and prejudice find no home here.”
“The perpetrators of these despicable acts will be tracked down, and held to account for their actions.”
This most recent incident comes on the heels of a Hatzola ambulance being defaced with a swastika, a Hitler reference and the words “death to Jews" on Saturday morning.
Rep. Weiner has been at the forefront of efforts to combat anti-Semitism in New York City. Last year, he released a study illustrating an increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes in the five boroughs and more recently he has led the effort to pressure Columbia University’s administration to fire professors who espouse a culture of hate towards Jews.
He has also cosponsored the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would to provide financial and technical assistance to local officials investigating and prosecuting hate crimes.
Weiner represents Belle Harbor, Queens.
