BROOKLYN - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today issued the following statement in recognition of National Professional Social Work Month:
“This month, we celebrate the profession of social work and recognize the men and women who dedicate their professional service to improving the quality of life for millions of Americans every day.
Working on the front lines, social workers play a monumental role in addressing some of the most difficult challenges in America’s diverse communities. They serve in every facet of our daily lives as our advocates, our counselors and our compassionate negotiators, laboring in hospitals, mental health clinics, schools, senior citizen facilities, prisons, the armed services and the private sector.
When I began my career as a social worker nearly forty years ago, I embarked on a lifelong journey to ensure that everyone has access to a quality education, health care and employment. I am proud to continue this mission in my service as a Member of Congress through the advocacy and introduction of important legislation like the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act, which I re-introduced this session.
The Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act is designed to address the many problems in the social worker profession. This important bill will direct critical investments and resources to support our nation’s social workers, improve their workplace conditions and give them the necessary support to do their jobs safely and effectively.
During this month, let us collectively applaud the leadership of the National Association of Social Workers and the hard work of our nation’s past, present, and future social workers for instilling hope to children, families and communities across this country."
