BROOKLYN - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement today in commemoration of the ninth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001:
“Today we recall the tragic events of September 11, 2001 -- a day that united our community and our nation in both grief and strength in the face of an incomprehensible atrocity. We honor the memory of those loved ones who perished innocently that day, and we recall the bravery of our first responders who selflessly risked their own lives to save the lives of others. We also give thanks to those from around the world whose overwhelming generosity supported our community as we worked to recover and rebuild during that time.
"Along with my colleagues from the New York congressional delegation and many other members of congress from across the country, we have been fighting for the passage of H.R. 847, the 'James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.' This legislation provides more than $7 billion, over the next ten years, to establish the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund as well as the World Trade Center Health Program that will provide health monitoring and treatment to those with World Trade Center-related health issues, and strengthens the World Trade Center Survivor Program which offers health screenings, monitoring and treatment to eligible survivors of the attack. Wrongfully and selfishly defeated earlier this year, H.R. 847 takes care of those to whom we owe a huge debt and it is my honor to fight for this bill at every turn until it is signed into law.
"As we reflect upon the events of that tragic day, let us continue to honor the heroism that was exhibited in the form of volunteerism and community service. Through our re-dedication to public service, we can ensure the legacy of 9/11 empowers us to become a stronger, kinder and more resilient nation."
