TOWNS’ STATEMENT ON THE EIGHTH COMMEMORATION OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
“A Day of Remembrance and Service”

BROOKLYN - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement today in commemoration of the eighth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001:

"Today, with a heavy heart, America recalls the painful memory of the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history.  Our love and sympathy goes out to the thousands of our fellow New Yorkers and all citizens who still mourn for loved ones lost on that fateful day.  For them, 9/11 represents a personal tragedy of unimaginable consequence.

"In time, however, “9/11” has come to stand for much more than just the horror of the terrorist attack.  It has come to represent the resilience, heroism and character of the American people.  We recall the images of first responders risking their lives to save others who were trapped in smoldering rubble.  We remember the tremendous generosity of people from around the country, and across the world, who gave of themselves to help victims of the attack.  We honor the selflessness of the thousands who enlisted in our Armed Forces during the months following September 11, 2001.  These brave and honorable men and women have dutifully served their country and risked their lives to defend our freedom and way of life.

"As I mentioned during my speech Wednesday on the floor of the House of Representatives in support of H.R. 718, “Recognizing September 11 as a ‘National Day of Service and Remembrance,” it is through acts of volunteering and community service that we can best honor the heroism of those who lost their lives and those who gave of themselves in the wake of the tragedy.

"Let us today, in the spirit of that great test of eight years ago, recommit to living more meaningful lives filled with decency, selflessness and a sense of compassion for all people who are in need."
