Statement From Rep. Edolphus "Ed" Towns on the Passage of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 (H.R. 2965)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today released the following statement on the passage of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010:

"The Passage of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 by the House of Representatives today removes a tremendous burden from the shoulders of many brave American soldiers who often are called upon to put their lives on the line so that we all can enjoy the freedoms we cherish so much.  After many years of review and discussions, our nation’s top military leaders have concluded that the unnecessary requirement of gay and lesbian soldiers to conceal their true identities was not a useful regulation for military service.  They have concluded that repealing this law would do nothing to harm our armed forces’ ability to defend the nation.

"I have long advocated for the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and was pleased to cast my vote to see its demise.  My only hope is that my colleagues in the United States Senate will see the wisdom of repealing this unfair and unnecessary burden on a specific group of soldiers.  My recent visit to Afghanistan helped me to appreciate the sacrifice so many young men and women are making to ensure our safety.  None of them should be made ashamed because of their sexual orientation.  It is a fitting gift we give them during this holiday season."
