Rep. Towns’ Statement on the Celebration of Hanukkah

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today released the following statement on the celebration of Hanukkah:

“Tonight, Jewish families around the world will begin celebrating the eight days of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

“Hanukkah is reserved as a time to celebrate and remember the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks, the restoration of the Holy Temple and the miracle of the Eternal Flame that lit the Temple for eight days.

“It was unwavering strength, faith and perseverance in the face of oppression that lifted the Jewish people to victory thousands of years ago. Today, the celebration of Hanukkah reminds us that we can all find the same qualities within ourselves.  May the Menorah that brightens the next eight nights for our Jewish neighbors remind us of our bright future filled with opportunity and promise. And may the Jewish community in Brooklyn and around the world have a happy and peaceful Hanukkah.”
