Statement From Rep. Edolphus "Ed" Towns on Passage of The Omnibus Trade Act of 2010 (H.R. 6517)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today released the following statement on the passage of The Omnibus Trade Act of 2010:

"The Passage of the Omnibus Trade Act of 2010 by the House of Representatives today represents a victory for hard-working Americans—many in the 10th Congressional District—who are adjusting to stark economic realities in today’s job market.  The bill contains several critical provisions that will boost the fortunes of workers refining their skills to compete in today’s labor environment.

"The bill includes an 18-month extension of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program (TAA) created more than 40 years ago to help workers who were displaced by trade developments.  Recent changes in trade policies have resulted in thousands of American workers seeing their jobs eliminated from the economy.  The TAA will continue to provide vital support for manufacturing and service sector workers through increased training support, longer term training, and simplified enrollment rules.  The bill also includes the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Community College and Career Training Program which provides key support and training for struggling workers and businesses across the country.

"We are pleased to have taken this action during the 111th Congress when so many Americans are facing uncertain futures as the holiday season approaches.  The Democratic Caucus pledges to continue our tireless commitment to lower- and middle-income Americans as we move into the New Year."
