Rep. Towns’ Statement in Honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month:

“This month, we pay tribute to Asian American and Pacific Islanders for their contributions to the United States. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made valuable and countless contributions to the development of our nation, and this month offers us the opportunity to recognize their values, traditions and achievements that have truly enhanced America’s culture and economy.

“One of the fastest growing and most diverse populations in the United States, the AAPI community is comprised of an estimated 16.6 million Americans who have backgrounds from dozens of countries. The diverse generations and descendents of Asian immigrants and natives from Hawaii and Pacific Islands have made and continue to make tremendous accomplishments in all areas of American life – from science to business to the military to the arts.

“As we celebrate the history and heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in our nation, we also take this opportunity to address challenges facing their community. I applaud programs like the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders that was established by President Obama last October to increase opportunities for the AAPI community to participate in federal programs where they remain underserved. Working with President Obama, the 111th Congress will continue to take further steps to revitalize our economy and to ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to improve their lives.

“In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I proudly recognize and support the rich contributions of the AAPI community in the 10th District and extend my gratitude for the entire AAPI community of the United States.”
