WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement today on the passing of Dr. Benjamin Hooks, former executive director of the NAACP and longtime civil rights leader:
“It is with a heavy heart I pause to remember the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks.
“A pioneer in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Hooks fought for more than half a century to open doors of opportunity, not only for people of color, but for all Americans. At the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Hooks was a pioneer in the NAACP-sponsored sit-ins and boycotts, bringing needed attention to the plight of African-Americans in this country.
“Dr. Hooks later became the first African American Criminal Court Judge in Tennessee, blazing a trail of opportunities for the many that would follow in his larger than life footsteps.
“A powerful and impassioned orator, Dr. Hooks fought hard for equality and justice over the course of his long career as a minister, patriot, and judge, making an indelible imprint on the progress of civil rights’ policies in this country.
“Dedicated to his faith, his family and his country, Dr. Hooks will forever be remembered in the hearts and minds of Americans who mourn his passing today.
