Rep. Towns' Statement in Recognition of Black History Month

BROOKLYN - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today issued the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:

Black History Month is a time when our nation recognizes generations of African Americans and their contributions that have defined and continue to shape the United States. We pay tribute to the remarkable men and women who have inspired us toward social justice and respect for all Americans.

African Americans have roots in the United States that contain stories of both struggle and success. The stories of African Americans such as Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and those from my hometown of Brooklyn, including Shirley Chisholm, continue to inspire and motivate us.

One year ago, African Americans celebrated several milestones – the inauguration of President Barack Obama and the centennial anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). I echo Dr. King’s call for all Americans to recommit themselves to the principles of justice and liberty upon which this country was built.

This month we also recognize that African American individuals make up a unique and diverse community, like the many faces in my home district.  Let us be inclusive of the different cultures that identify African American communities across the United States.

During this Black History Month and throughout the year, please join me in proudly honoring the great achievements of African Americans.
