WASHINGTON -Today, U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) joined millions of Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
“This date in Mexico’s history marks the triumph of Mexican forces over the French Army in the battle of Puebla in 1862 – a historic moment for the Mexican people that inspires all of us to recognize the value of freedom,” said Rep. Towns. “For Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become a symbol of unity and patriotism in its history. In the United States, it is also a celebration of the rich cultural heritage and contributions of people of Mexican heritage,”
People of Mexican heritage make up 63 percent of Hispanic Americans, the fastest-growing minority group in the United States with 47 million people. Today, there are 29 Hispanic Members in the United States Congress, including 25 Democrats. Many of them are Mexican-Americans, representing constituencies from all around the country.
Rep. Towns noted that Democrats in Congress will continue to take America in a New Direction for Hispanic families, working to create American jobs and a strong new foundation for economy, protecting Main Street and the middle class.
“Hispanics share with other Americans the common goals of freedom, opportunity, and a chance to build a better life,” Rep. Towns added. “The 111th Congress is committed to advancing a New Direction that ensures Hispanics realize the American dream. Today, we recognize the Mexican-American and greater Hispanic community for making our economy stronger and our culture more vibrant.”
