Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns celebrated Earth Day and vowed to continue his work in Congress to safeguard the environment, end global warming and promote a cleaner, greener, and more thriving economy for the American people.
“As stewards of this great planet, we have a duty to protect and preserve it. That requires comprehensive measures to assure that our air, land and water are clean,” said Congressman Towns.
Working to move the United States towards greater energy independence and security, protecting consumers, and increasing the efficiency of products, buildings, and vehicles are all priorities for Congressman Towns in the 110th Congress. That is why he supported the passing of landmark legislation, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008. This bill extends and expands tax incentives for renewable electricity, energy and fuel, as well as for plug-in hybrid cars, and energy efficient homes, buildings, and appliances.
Committed to preserving the environment, Congressman Towns supported and encouraged the passing of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 that will increase vehicle fuel efficiency standards and help save American families $700 to $1,000 per year at the gas pump. “It is important that we conserve, restore and sustain the environment as well as the natural habitats of wild life. If we act in a way that is disconnected and disrespectful towards nature, we ultimately prohibit future generations’ sensitivity towards the environment, the community and mankind.”
Having received a 100% voting record on his “Defenders of Wildlife” report card and a 90% rating from the League of Conservation Voters, Congressman Towns is currently working with the Democratic Caucus to end unnecessary subsidies to Big Oil companies and invest in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
