Brooklyn, New York – Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns is being honored on Friday, April 25, 2008 at Medgar Ever’s College in the College Founders Auditorium, located at 1650 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. At 11:00 AM, Members of the Alpha chapter of PI ETA KAPPA Honor Society at Medgar Evers College and the Officers of the Male Development and Empowerment Center will host their spring induction ceremony. Congressman Towns will be inducted as an Honorary Fellow, along with other distinguished leaders, such as: Ambassador Andrew Young, Congressman Charlie Rangel (NY-15), TV One’s Chairman Alfred Higgins, and many other men and women of distinction.
“It is my honor to accept this award in the company of such distinguished and profound trailblazers, who are making real differences in African American and Latino males,” said Congressman Towns. “I recognize and celebrate the progress that we are making. For the young men of our present and future, I stand ready and charged to continue working to improve the conditions of our schools, access to quality health care, and the overall state of our communities,” asserted Towns.
The induction ceremony recognizes men and women, who have been exemplars of success through membership, advocacy, and investment in African American and Latino males. Honorees were chosen in recognition of their outstanding contributions and represent a diverse group of individuals, who have provided opportunities for students to excel academically, display exemplary character, and commit themselves to serious leadership in their respective communities.
Towns stated emphatically, “The truth of the matter is that we will not advance as a community and as a nation if we do not uphold and empower these young men towards a brighter future. They are worthy of our focus and investment.”
Edolphus “Ed” Towns, a former social worker and community activist in Brooklyn, New York, is a 13-term veteran in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represents the 10th Congressional District of New York. Over his long career, Towns’ legislative work in education, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services and environmental issues has earned him numerous awards and legislative accomplishments.
