Washington, DC - Congressman Edolphus "Ed" Towns, 10th Congressional District, New York, today expressed his strong support for the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, a proposal which would create a contiguous greenway for pedestrian and cyclist use stretching from Greenpoint to Sunset Park.
"I am strongly in favor of the development of the Brooklyn Greenway, which will offer an alternative, healthier, and greener mode of transportation to Williamsburg residents, giving them access to other Brooklyn neighborhoods while promoting a clean environment and easing traffic congestion on Brooklyn's roads," Congressman Towns said.
Among the Greenway proposal's goals are connecting Brooklyn's diverse neighborhoods, providing the means for alternative transportation to residents, improving traffic conditions, and drawing tourists and business firms to the borough. Moreover, the proposal is aimed at improving the overall health of Brooklyn residents by affording them more opportunities for exercise.
"I am strongly in favor of the development of the Brooklyn Greenway, it is vitally important that more opportunities for exercise and recreation are provided for Brooklyn residents, especially in lower-income neighborhoods with little access to open parks or recreation areas. The Brooklyn Greenway plan would provide a much-needed space for residents to participate in exercise and recreation," Congressman Towns said.
To celebrate Brooklyn's cultural diversity, the Greenway will pass by and offer views of various cultural and historical landmarks, as well as offer scenic views of the city skyline, parks, and the waterfront.
