Rep. Towns’ Statement in Observance of Human Rights Day

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) issued the following statement today in observance of Human Rights Day:

“On this 61st anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, I proudly join all Americans in remembering the world’s global affirmation to uphold the unassailable rights of all people.

“Today, America and countries around the world pledge their commitment to the inalienable rights of human beings. In America, we honor these celebrated principles upon which our great nation was built– that every person has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

“The United States has historically acknowledged that individuals of many nations may not be as fortunate as we are. That is why we, as Americans, remain resolute in our defense of human rights and human dignity around the world. As a proud co-sponsor of H.Res. 416, a resolution to express the United States’ recommitment to international human rights, I salute our country’s continued efforts to preserve and advance human rights at home and abroad, but our work is not over.

“In order to see the end of torture, oppression, and other violations of human rights that occur every day in different parts of the world, we must continue to work together to promote and protect human rights everywhere.”
