Towns Funding Will Boost Jewish Community Council of Canarsie Holocaust Survivor Support Program

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today announced that he secured $300,000 to bring community support services to Brooklyn Holocaust survivors.  The Jewish Community Council of Canarsie will benefit from the funding that was approved last August in the Labor, Health and Education Appropriations Act of 2010 and was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2010, which President Obama signed into law last month.

“I am proud to support the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie and their efforts provide critical support services to Holocaust survivors living in our community,” said Rep. Towns.

The funding will provide significant assistance to the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie, which collaborates with the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, to provide important support systems to Holocaust survivors in Brooklyn.  The funding is administered through the Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families.

As a result of the funding, the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie will be able to hire full-time caseworkers and psychological counselors to help address the unmet nutritional, emotional and financial needs of at-risk Holocaust survivors.  The services will help individuals maintain and improve their quality of life while providing comprehensive case management services, psychosocial support groups, home visitations, counseling, and several other services to Holocaust survivors in the community.
