Rep. Towns' Statement in Honor of Labor Day

WASHINGTON -Today, we honor the important legacy of our nation’s historic organized labor movement. We remember those men and women who have dedicated themselves to fighting for reforms and principles that give workers the rights and security they deserve, such as the principle of equal opportunity for all, fair pay for an honest day’s work, health insurance and a minimum wage.

Established in 1882, Labor Day is a significant holiday in Brooklyn’s history. The Brooklyn-based Central Labor Union of New York pushed for the holiday’s creation and held the initial Labor Day parade in the streets of Manhattan. Today, millions of people from around the world gather in the streets of Brooklyn to recognize Labor Day in a spirited celebration of cultural diversity. During the past century, Brooklyn’s Labor Day parade has evolved into one of the most unique and recognized celebrations in the world.

In honor of those men and women who have fought to uphold and improve workers' rights here in Brooklyn and across the nation, let us re-dedicate ourselves to ensuring these principles of equality and perseverance endure for generations to come.
