Rep. Towns’ Statement on the Passing of Legendary Performer and Civil Rights Icon Lena Horne

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement today in memory of Lena Horne:

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of sensational jazz singer, actress and civil rights advocate Lena Horne, whose groundbreaking performances and stardom spanned six decades.  Her lifelong passion for the arts has become a source of inspiration and encouragement for generations of African American performers.

“Throughout her career, from Broadway to Hollywood, Ms. Horne heroically challenged and broke racial barriers in the entertainment industry.  She left behind a legacy that has forever changed the opportunities available for female African American performers. She never stopped fighting for equality and justice, while promoting her love for the arts. Ms. Horne also expressed her strong commitment for the advancement of African American women through her active involvement in the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

“A native of Brooklyn, Ms. Horne will be truly missed, but her music and legacy will never fade in our memory. I extend my condolences to Ms. Horne’s family and friends.”
