BROOKLYN, New York – U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) will personally deliver a Congressional Record, an official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States Congress, to the home of Edith Lovell for her lifetime service to her family and community.
Born on February 8, 1904 in Barbados, West Indies, Lovell migrated to the United States in 1924 and shortly thereafter relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where she has resided ever since. Lovell is a vault of experiences, having lived through the Harlem Renaissance; two world wars; the Brooklyn Dodgers going west; the Civil Rights Movement; fourteen New York City Mayors; the New York City Blackout of 1977 that resulted in city-wide pillaging and mayhem; fifteen U.S. presidents; and, the historic election of the nation’s first black president, Barack Obama, for whom she galvanized community and family support during his presidential campaign.
Many Brooklyn residents say that Lovell is an inspiration, a woman with vitality, wisdom, and courage.
