Background:

Violence against women is a pervasive problem that affects one in three women who will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.  This issue transcends borders, cultures and economic difference, and in 2007, the New York City Police Department responded to 229, 453 domestic violence incidents.

At the press conference, the above-named organizations will be recognized for raising awareness about domestic violence and lauded for their efforts in domestic violence prevention, outreach and support services for victims. Featured speakers include various members of the New York Congressional Delegation, agency representatives and a testimonial from a client survivor of domestic abuse.
