Washington, DC - Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-Brooklyn) released the following statement following the decision by a federal judge to dismiss the NAACP's case against handgun makers, ruling that the group showed gun retailers were careless but failed to prove that its members were uniquely harmed.
“While I am deeply disappointed with Judge Weinstein decision to dismiss the case and disagree with him that the African-American community has not been disproportionately impacted by handgun violence, the judge’s own ruling put the gun industry on notice for its irresponsible conduct. The evidence in the case and the judge’s own strong ruling today clearly stated that the gun industry's conduct has contributed to the use of its products to commit crimes.
“If the gun industry does not heed the Judge Weinstein advice to take the obvious steps needed to eliminate or even reduce the public nuisance they individually and collectively have created, I will work in Congress to make sure they do."
