Congressman Towns Tackles Mail Problems for Spring Creek Residents
Hosts Meeting With Brooklyn Postmaster to Address Concerns

Washington, DC - Congressman Ed Towns (D-Brooklyn) led a meeting on December 16, 2003 between Spring Creek Towers residents and the Brooklyn Postmaster, Joseph Lubrano, to ensure that the mail gets delivered on time and to the correct apartment.  Mail delivery has been especially problematic during the holiday season, which is compounded by the Canarsie post office being one of the busiest in all of New York City.

"By bringing the Postmaster into the community and having him listen to the residents concerns firsthand, the Postmaster is now better informed to deal with any potential mail problems for this community," said Towns.  "I was pleased by the commitment Postmaster Lubrano made to Spring Creek Tower residents to hold those responsible for any problems."

Several members of Spring Creek Towers turned out for the nearly two-hour meeting on postal delivery.  Residents had mostly general complaints that mail was sometimes delivered to the wrong apartment boxes or to the wrong building.

Postmaster Lubrano told Spring Creek residents such problems were not acceptable.  He asked residents to contact him or station manager, Raymond Beshara, immediately when these problems occur.  The Postmaster said it was critical that residents inform him of the problem right away so he knows which carrier may be responsible for the error.  The Postmaster vowed to speak with the individuals responsible in order to minimize the problem.  All letter carriers on the routes were briefed about residents concerns following the meeting as well.

The Postmaster also emphasized that residents should do the best that they can to make sure that any mail sent to them includes their apartment number on package.  A lack of an apartment number on the mail is the single biggest contributing factor to misdelivered mail.

Other resident also expressed disappointment about receiving "junk mail," which is often addressed to a previous tenant.  The Postmaster explained that such mail usually addressed to the "current resident" in addition to the previous tenant so the postal service still has to deliver this mail.
