Washington, DC - Congressman Ed Towns (D-Brooklyn) joined several city, state, and federal officials in calling for a federal investigation into the tragic death of Timothy Stansbury. On January 24, 2004, Stansbury was fatally shot by Officer Richard Neri, whom he encountered at a door opening to the roof of a public housing building in Brooklyn, New York. At a press conference today, a letter signed by Towns and several other members of the New York congressional delegation was released, calling on U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft to investigate possible civil rights violations committed by the officer in this cases and ongoing policies and practices of the NYPD.
Towns released the following statement in support of the investigation:
"We have all been deeply saddened by the tragic death of Timothy Stansbury. However, what makes this tragedy even more troubling is the unjust and senseless nature in which it occurred. By all reported accounts, the officer’s conduct was highly questionable and thus, must be thoroughly investigated to prevent a similar incident from happening again. Given the recurring nature of these problems, there is a great need for the Justice Department to act. Until we get a full federal investigation into the possible civil rights violations of the NYPD, we will continue to have more grieving families like the Stansburys."
