Towns Secures $2 Million for Renewable Energy Technology

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives approved $2 million to purchase, install and maintain new hydropower turbines in Brooklyn.  Rep. Towns sought funding for the Kinetic Hydropower System (KHPS) Turbines that can generate five megawatts of clean, renewable energy and will create new high-tech, high-paying jobs.

“Projects like the East River Kinetic Hydropower System Turbines are symbolic of the revolutionary steps we can take to protect our planet and ensure our children and grandchildren live in a safe and clean environment,” said Rep. Towns.  “I am committed to supporting investments like KHPS Turbines that will reduce Brooklyn’s dependence on foreign oil and reduce energy costs for all Brooklynites.”

Once deployed in the East River, the turbines will utilize the tidal flow to generate electricity (similar to wind farms) and will connect to an on-shore electric substation using an underwater transmission line.  Since tides are a constantly flowing source of renewable energy, the modules will provide a predictable and reliable supply of electricity to support the power grid and operate efficiently and cost-effectively.

As an advocate for green technology and improved energy efficiency, Rep. Towns also supported the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that is now investing billions of dollars nationwide in projects that will lower energy costs, reduce American dependence on foreign oil, and create green jobs to help stimulate the economy.

“I was a proud co-sponsor of the economic stimulus legislation that is helping to get our economy back on track while making crucial investments in green projects that will conserve our environment and halt global warming,” said Rep. Towns.  “This project is an excellent example of how we can stimulate our economy while protecting our environment.”
