Towns’ Effort Would Advance St. Joseph’s College Science and Technology Programs

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives approved nearly half a million dollars for St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, NY, to purchase new computers and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.  The funding was approved in the Labor, Health and Education Appropriations Act of 2010, which passed the House earlier this month.  The next step for the bill is approval by the United States Senate.

“I am proud to support St. Joseph’s college in its efforts to prepare students for careers in science and computer technology,” said Rep. Towns.  “While many college students in Brooklyn do not have access to the tools and resources necessary to compete in a 21st century global economy, St. Joseph’s College is stepping in to fill the void.”

St. Joseph’s College will use the $400,000 to build new biology and chemistry laboratories, and purchase state-of-the-art computers, microscopes and videoconferencing equipment.  With the additional funding, students at both the Brooklyn and Long Island campuses will be able to apply theories taught in every major science course in a laboratory – a crucial part of scientific learning and research.

Students at both St. Joseph’s campuses are from predominantly moderate-income families, and more than 70 percent rely on some form of financial aid.  Rep. Towns is committed to increasing educational opportunities for underserved students and empowering these young men and women to pursue careers in fields that will make them competitive in the global economy.
