BROOKLYN - Rep. Edolphus "Ed" Towns (NY-10) today released the following remarks in support of the new Citywide Fatherhood initiative, announced by Mayor Bloomberg last week:

“On Friday, Mayor Bloomberg announced a new citywide Fatherhood initiative that leverages several key public resources to offer more than a dozen programs encouraging responsible fatherhood. These programs will range from parenting classes to educational activities for fathers and their children at Housing Authority community centers.

“I applaud Mayor Bloomberg for taking on this ambitious initiative. All too often parental programs provide a strong focus on mothers, but leave out fathers. These programs will offer vital resources that will strengthen families, and in turn, strengthen our communities.

“As a longtime advocate for fatherhood support programs, and a co-sponsor of a similar Federal initiative, I strongly support the mission of Mayor Bloomberg’s programs.  While more needs to be done, rest assured that I will continue fighting for families in the 10th Congressional District of New York.”
