WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Edolphus “Ed” Towns (NY-10) released the following statement in honor of Veterans Day, November 11, 2009:
“America’s brave veterans have made unparalleled sacrifices for our country. As we remember their patriotic sacrifices on this Veterans Day, we renew our commitment to keep our promises to the nation’s three million troops and reservists, their families, and 24 million veterans.
“While we honor their service, we also pledge to fulfill our duty to provide earned benefits to these courageous men and women. I have proudly joined my colleagues in Congress to pass legislation that rewards our veterans’ commitment to our nation and ensures they have access to quality health care, education and career opportunities.
“The Democratic Congress has enacted key legislation that is helping our veterans secure jobs, benefits and medical care. As part of the Recovery Act, Congress provided nearly two million disabled veterans a payment to help make ends meet. The new Post 9-11 GI Bill, which I supported, took effect in August 2009 and provides our servicemen and women access to a four-year college education.
“I also salute the unprecedented efforts this Congress has made to meet our veterans’ needs for quality health care. The Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act will allow Congress to approve funding for veterans’ medical care a year in advance. This will provide the Department of Veterans Affairs with adequate time to plan and deliver efficient and effective health care to our veterans.
“I join my colleagues in pledging that this Congress will ensure that no veteran is left behind. We are constantly working to fulfill that pledge by delivering to these brave Americans the benefits and services they deserve. We can best honor our service members by providing them with the care and tools they need to pursue their dreams.”
