Washington, DC -- After undergoing uterine fibroid surgery on Monday, July 23, 2007, U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke, NY-11, is pleased to have been given medical clearance to travel and resume a limited schedule. Rep. Clarke will be the keynote speaker at the 3rd Annual St. Ann Homecoming and Heritage Festival Banquet in Jamaica on Friday, August 17, 2007. The proceeds from the banquet will be used to establish the Marcus Garvey Resource Center in St. Ann’s Bay, the birthplace of Marcus Garvey.
“When St. Ann’s extended the invitation last winter, no one could have foreseen my recent surgery. I’m delighted that the healing and recovery process has gone well enough for me to attend this historic event,” stated Rep. Clarke. Previous keynote speakers have included Rep. Charles Rangel and Mr. Harry Belafonte.
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that disproportionately affect African American women. Rep. Clarke is a co-sponsor of the Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2007, H.R. 2349, which was introduced during the 110th Congress.
“I have been deeply moved by the outpouring of prayers and well wishes,” offered Rep. Clarke. “Although I am still under the watchful eyes of my doctors, I look forward to participating in a few of the remaining events held in central Brooklyn this summer.”
