Washington, DC – The Kids of Katrina Ninth District-wide donation drive, coordinated by Congressman Bill Shuster, has concluded and the 53-foot truck filled with supplies for children has left for Lafayette, Louisiana. The drive kicked-off over the weekend with drop-off locations in Franklin, Blair and Indiana counties and ended yesterday.
“All of the goods collected will be useful and will directly help kids affected by Hurricane Katrina. We focused on children’s supplies because that is what people on the ground told us they needed,” said Shuster. “Everybody’s efforts and donations over the last few days will have a direct impact on thousands of people left stranded.”
Today the goods were organized, packed and sent-off to Louisiana where they will be received by Congressman Charles Boustany, who is coordinating the arrival. He represents a rural area, similar to central and western Pennsylvania, where about 200,000 displaced people have moved needing help.
“The goods collected have filled an entire 53-foot truck – which is an amazing accomplishment for a four-day drive,” said Shuster. “Some of the stories from this event are just incredible. Everyday people came with more and more supplies, and sometimes they came with truckloads. Even today, as we were packing up the truck to be shipped, people were still bringing diapers, books and more to help.”
“There are thousands of evacuees that have found shelter in my district. While they may have lost homes, cars and jobs, they haven’t lost hope thanks to the incredible generosity of the American people. This drive will continue to give these men, women and children faith that there will be a bright tomorrow for them and that they can and will rebuild their lives. I thank Congressman Shuster, his staff and the Pennsylvania volunteers for taking it upon themselves to reach out and take care of the evacuees in my district. We will never forget the kindness of the people of Pennsylvania,” said Congressman Boustany of Louisiana.
The goods are being shipped by Perfetti Trucking, Smith Transport and Gabler Tucking, all donating time and resources to help the cause. Local volunteers provided much-needed support at the drop-off stations and have helped make this a success. |
