| Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster voted in favor of a bill that would make it a crime to take a minor across state lines for an abortion to avoid informing the parent. The Child Custody Protection Act (S. 403) closes a loophole that previously allowed minors to travel out-of-state for abortions to circumvent the rules in place that require parental notification. The bill passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 264 to 153.
“This is about parental rights,” said Shuster. “Abortion clinics and doctors do not have more right to counsel a child than a parent does. This important legislation puts the power back in the hands of the parents and gives them the right to raise their children as they see fit.”
The state of Pennsylvania has long had laws in place to prevent minors from getting an abortion without parental consent. This measure will extend the same benefits to parents across the country and ensure that minors can not make lethal and life-altering decisions without the consent of the parents.
“This bill aims to give the job of parenting back to the parents and not leave it in the hands of strangers,” said Shuster. |
