Shuster Announces Grants to Firefighters

DHS Grants Across District Will Strengthen Firefighter Response, Safeguard Communities

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster is pleased to announce that nine fire and rescue departments throughout the 9th District have been awarded grants from the Department of Homeland Security to help them better protect the communities they serve. The grants were awarded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

“The announcement of these grants is great news for the 9th district,” Shuster said.  “These grants are a perfect example of how taxpayer dollars should be spent.  These grants are competitive, need based and reviewed by fellow fire fighters.  I am encouraged that so many of our local fire companies are taking advantage of this important grant program.”

The nine fire companies to receive the grants include:

  • Alexandria Volunteer Fire Company: $94,525.00 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Saxton Volunteer Fire Company: $129,617.00 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Six Mile Run Area Vol. Fire Company: $107,549 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Fannett-Metal Fire & Ambulance Company: $87,400 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Waynesboro Ambulance Squad: $38,400 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Tunnelton Volunteer Fire Department: $56,335 for operations and safety equipment;

  • Saltsburg Volunteer Fire Department: $105,189 for a new vehicle;

  • Three Springs Fire Company: $241,300 for a new vehicle;

  • Logan Township United Fire Department: $46,678 for operations and safety equipment.

“Our volunteer fire fighters are our first line of defense in times of emergency,” Shuster said.  “These firefighters are our friends and our neighbors and they never shy away from danger in their service to our communities.  I am pleased to see these federal funds go back into our communities to better protect those who protect us each and every day.”
